未来地球一天可能变25小时
据俄罗斯《真理报》3月30日报道，“日子一天天变长”。对于外行来说，他们可能会认为这是说北半球的夏季的白天比冬季的白天长。但是，地球学家却对这句话另有解释：他们发现日子逐渐变长的现象不仅仅是北半球的春天的特有现象，地球的一天真的在变长，将来一天可能变成25小时。
造成这一现象最重要原因是月球。月球引力造成海洋和地球深处产生永久波，使得地球似乎成了“摇动器”。地球好比一个不断转动的花样滑冰运动员，若要将旋转的速度降下来，这名运动员则必须将双臂伸展开来。这同样是地球一天在遥远的将来变成25小时的原因。
大约5.3亿年前，地球自转的速度超过今天，但其绕太阳旋转的速度却一直很稳定。在那一时期，地球上的小时数同现在一样，但是天数比现在多出几十天，达到420天。
英国达勒姆大学天文学家理查德·斯蒂芬森在《天文学史杂志》撰文称，根据可靠的历史资料，综观人类历史，地球自转速度一直在减慢。
世界时间是建立在地球自转速度基础上的一个大致时间，由太阳方位决定，也就是所说的格林尼治标准时间。将这一时间延长是必要的，因为每隔几年，世界时间便会多出一秒。
