中国的学位是有三级：学士，硕士，博士。最复杂的是学士学位。目前学士学位证书的种类是最多的，包括普通高等教育毕业生学士学位证书、成人高等教育毕业生学士学位证书、普通高等教育当中还细分为四年制，五年制，三年制，二年制。成人高等教育毕业生也是一样。解释一下：四年制是大多数的普通高等教育毕业生的学制，五年制有建筑学和医学。三年制是某些特殊专业。二年制是专升本（属于普通高等教育，也包括高职升本科）。
成人高等教育又细分为高等教育自学考试，成人高校，网络教育等等，但具体到学位证书上区别不大。到了硕士博士，无论是统招、定向、委培，在职还是脱产，同等学力申硕还是申博，一概是统一的证书样式。简单说，到了硕士博士阶段，不区分什么形式的教育，学位证书是一模一样的。工程硕士加了个工程硕士字样，工商管理硕士加了工商管理硕士字样，其他的专业硕士学位也是在学位证书上面加上专业名称的字样。要注意的是硕士学位细分为专业硕士学位和普通硕士学位，前者比如软件工程硕士，工商管理硕士(MBA)，公共管理硕士（MPA）,农业推广硕士，法律硕士等等，一般只有学位证，没有研究生毕业证。后者需要通过学位课程考试和学位论文答辩，必须有学位论文指导教师。而前者只需要完成课程计划即可，侧重实际应用。普通硕士学位侧重学术研究。
在美国，硕士学位有两种拿法，如果选择参加一个项目，可以拿到学位；选择写篇学术论文，也可以拿到硕士学位，但通常是为攻读博士学位打基础。美国硕士学位大多是应用型的，而且硕士学位也不值钱，想拿很容易，几乎满大街都是。美国的博士学位是很有含金量的，被各行各业所高看。硕士学位很好拿，因为通常硕士学位有点像职业教育，一方面为职场作准备；另一方面为科学研究学术生涯打基础，是过渡性质的。所以在英国，很多专业的硕士学位只需要一年。
